Project presentation: New Gstaad+ building in Schönried

Bergbahn Destination Gstaad AG is planning an ambitious project of considerable proportions - the planned new Gstaad+ building in Schönried


In order to meet the high demands on landscape, architecture and the environment, Bergbahn Destination Gstaad (BDG) has decided to organise an architectural competition.

In close co-operation with numerous local architects, three teams were carefully selected, consisting of architects, landscape architects, building physicists, traffic planners and engineers. These teams received a detailed spatial programme and took part in a joint kick-off meeting on site to discuss all relevant framework conditions.

The competition included two interim meetings and a final submission to allow for as much operational, technical and design input as possible. A jury consisting of three architects, a landscape architect and two members of the BDG assessed the projects in order to bring them to an almost identical high level.

Why is a competition necessary for the architecture? For large-scale projects such as this one, the canton stipulates that the planning process must be subject to a quality assurance procedure. The aim of this procedure is to combine the numerous aspects of such a complex project in the best possible way and to identify different approaches to solutions. Quality assurance procedures ensure that the architecture fulfils the requirements of the project.Why is a competition necessary for the architecture? Current status of spatial planning:

The basis for the realisation of the large-scale project is the development plan, which defines the construction areas and corridors in which the cable car and its stations are to be located. These development regulations are subject to a multi-stage consultation and approval process. After an extensive preliminary review, all points were finalised. Due to the size of the project, a second preliminary review is being carried out to ensure that all points can be clarified by the relevant authorities and to increase the chances of approval. The dossier is currently with the Office for Municipalities and Spatial Planning (AGR) and is expected to be finalised in the summer.

Tender and determination of the railway manufacturer:

Following a study trip to numerous railways and manufacturers, initial talks were held to put the three railways out to tender. The detailed tender documents were drawn up and finalised and sent to the manufacturers on 10 January 2024. Numerous visits to the three manufacturers in the region will take place over the next few weeks in order to take all parameters into account for the tender. The procedure for awarding the contract should be completed by the beginning of March 2024.
